Description:
1870-CC Seated Liberty Dollar, MS62
Attractive and Semiprooflike
1870-CC $1 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Variety 2-C. The 1870-CC silver dollar is known for its low mintage (only 11,758 struck) and for being the first coin of any kind to roll off the Carson City Mint's solitary coin press in early February, 1870. The new mint opened just 15 miles from Virginia City and the famous Comstock Lode. Gold was discovered near there in 1859 but prospectors could neither recognize nor process the blue-gray rock and clay that clogged their equipment, only later finding out it was high-grade silver mixed with gold ore. By then, untold millions in undiscovered silver washed away down nearby rivers and streams with the tailings.

Still, in 1870 enough silver was flowing into the Mint to strike dollars such as this beautiful specimen. Original reddish-golden toning deepens near the rim over slightly reflective fields. The technical grade is limited by some indentations on the portrait, but visually the coin offers a rich and balanced appeal of an even higher grade. The PCGS population is 7 in 62 and 7 finer (10/13). NGC reports 2 in 62 and 6 finer.
