Description:
1860 'Transitional' Half Dime, MS64
Judd-267, The 'Coin Without a Country'
1860 H10C Transitional MS64 PCGS. Judd-267, Pollock-315, R.4. The so-called "Coin Without a Country" marries the old With Stars obverse with Longacre's new "Cereal Wreath" reverse. Struck by Mint Director James Ross Snowden for sale or trade to contemporary collectors. All Transitional half dimes show a prominent diagonal die scratch from the base below the rock. Most are weakly defined on the rock and upper left portion of the wreath. This is a remarkably well-defined example. The mostly brilliant surfaces show the usual die striations in the field, and striking weakness is limited to several of the obverse stars and the upper right portion of the wreath. (NGC ID# 2346, PCGS# 4373)
