Near Gem Mint State 1863 Half Dime1863 H10C MS64 NGC. V-1. An extremely important opportunity is presented to the specialist, for this date is seldom encountered in Mint State grades. Most high quality survivors are proofs. Mintage totaled 18,000 business strikes and 460 Proofs. Additional Proof restrikes are also known, according to Walter Breen in his Complete Encyclopedia. This example meets his description for "Originals," with its repunched 18 in the date. According to Breen, Proof restrikes had the top of the D on the obverse open. Business strikes are rare due to a relatively low survival rate, characteristic of all precious metals issues which were hoarded during the Civil War. Satiny surfaces are fully lustrous with lovely silver coloration and wisps of gold toning. A couple splashes of darker color are seen on the reverse.
