Lustrous, Originally Toned 1869-S Half Dime, MS66 NGC1869-S H10C MS66 NGC. Widely circulated at the time of issue, S-mint half dimes are quite scarce in collectible grades. Many years ago, Walter Breen told me (MVW) that S-mint half dimes from the 1850s and 1860s are so scarce because many of them were used for buttons. Perhaps this is an apocryphal story, but it is one that acknowledges the scarcity of these coins and seeks an alternate explanation for their difficulty in higher grades. This is a lovely, high grade example that has thick mint frost that is covered with an even layer of gray-rose toning. There are no obvious abrasions on either side, the only defect we see is some localized softness of strike on the reverse. Census: 5 in 66, 2 finer (1/06).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 234S, PCGS# 4395)
