Description

Rarely Encountered 1842-O Half Dollar
WB-101, Small Date, Small Letters
R.8 in Mint State, MS62

1842-O 50C Small Date, Small Letters MS62 PCGS. CAC. In The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars, Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert identify three major varieties of 1842-O half dollars. The present coin is an example of the WB-101 variety, characterized by the small date and small letters on the reverse. The mintage of the small date variety is believed to be a minuscule 203,000 pieces. This tiny mintage is further divided into two sub-varieties, distinguished by the placement of the mintmark. The present example has a low mintmark, centered over the F in HALF, and a die crack between AL. This reverse die was also used in combination with an obverse from 1841. Die state analysis convinces Wiley and Bugert that this variety of 1842-O half dollar was actually struck before the 1841-O. WB-101 is extremely rare in Mint State grades, with Wiley and Bugert awarding it an R.8 rating at this level.
The present coin features attractive gray toning over muted Mint luster. The strike is a little soft, as always seen on this issue. Handling marks are minimal for the grade. This example is a delightful, interesting prize for the Seated Liberty specialist. Population: 1 in 62, 1 finer (11/08).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
