Description:
1856-O Half Dollar, MS64
Obtainable O-Mint Type Coin
1856-O 50C MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1856-O is one of the more available O-mints in the Seated half series. Undoubtedly the mintage of 2.6 million pieces has a great deal to do with this availability. That being said, the MS64 grade level represents the best value among high-grade pieces as there is a pronounced drop off at the MS65 level. In the case of PCGS coins, 35 have been certified in MS64 but only eight are finer (9/11). This is a splendid, brightly lustrous example that has deep golden-brown toning in the centers of each side and pronounced blue at the margins. The obverse is fully struck while the reverse only shows slight softness on the eagle's left (facing) claw and the fletchings of the arrow.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
