Description

Choice Uncirculated 1861-O Half Dollar

1861-O 50C MS64 NGC. An immensely popular Seated Half Dollar. After Louisiana seceded from the Union, the state seized the New Orleans Mint and coined 1,240,000 1861-O Half Dollars for their own purposes as well as a further 962,633 for the Confederate State of America. The dies were the same used by the chief coiner to produce the 330,000 1861-O Half Dollars that he delivered for the Union the day before the rebel takeover. As this specimen does not display either the obverse or reverse die cracks that Wiley and Bugert attribute to the "Confederate" strikings, this example probably hails from the earlier Union delivery. Purple-mauve patina decorates the peripheral areas on each side. The underlying surfaces display bright satiny luster and no significantly worrisome distractions. While not full, the strike is crisp and suitably above par for the series. An important and popular issue from a tumultuous year in the history of the New Orleans Mint, conditionally scarce and highly desirable at the current level. Population: 40 in 64, 13 finer (8/05).(#6303) (Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 24J8, PCGS# 6303)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
