Description

Richly Toned 1861-O Half, Impressive MS 66 Quality

1861-O 50C MS 66 PCGS. The 1861-O half dollar is one of the most important half dollar issues from the New Orleans Mint. The 2.5 million pieces produced were split, albeit unevenly, between the federal government, the state of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. Despite references to die cracks and die linkage, there is no conclusive way to differentiate between coins from each of these issues. Nevertheless, the beauty and importance of this Gem should be obvious to advanced collectors. Both sides are draped in swirling frosty luster over which lies tan-gray toning. A few whispers of electric-blue color are also intermingled throughout, but the surfaces are silent on the subject of bothersome abrasions. Slight striking softness is confined to the lower reverse over the arrow feather and the eagle's left (facing) talon. This coin is one of the three finest examples known to NGC and PCGS (7/00). (NGC ID# 24J8, PCGS# 6303)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
