Description

Superb Gem 1864-S Seated Half Dollar

1864-S 50C MS67 NGC. For all practical purposes, this coin should not even exist in this grade. Although the San Francisco Mint produced 658,000 half dollars during the year, these coins immediately entered circulation on the West Coast. Back East, silver and gold coins were hoarded due to the war, but in California, the greater need was coinage for commerce. At the same time, collectors did not care about mintmarks, but simply acquired one example of each date, usually a Philadelphia Mint proof. The only branch mint coins that survived were those few pieces set aside by local collectors near each mint, or the few pieces that survived purely as a matter of chance. This Superb Gem is fully brilliant with soft, frosty luster on both sides. It is sharply struck with exceptional details, and presents amazing eye appeal. It is the only MS67 certified by NGC, and one of just four coins graded by this service finer than MS63!(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 24JE, PCGS# 6312)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
