1870-CC 50C AU58+ NGC. WB-101, WB-4, R.6....
Condition Census Specimen
Louisiana collector Roy Pohler assembled a hoard of 90 pieces that he acquired from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Well over half of that hoard graded no better than VG. Only three coins graded AU and no examples from that hoard were Mint State. Details of the 1870-CC half dollar appear in A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume II, Carson City Branch Mint by Bill Bugert (2010).
The top half dozen pieces from all sources include two Mint State coins, an AU58 NGC coin, an AU55 PCGS coin, and one or two coins graded AU53. Bugert included a detailed census. This piece apparently ranks third or fourth finest of all known 1870-CC half dollars.
An attractive near-Mint specimen with excellent eye appeal, this 1870-CC half dollar has satin luster with exceptional design definition. Most of the stars are sharp, considerable head detail is noted, and the eagle's feathers and claws are strong. Light silver-gray surfaces shine through speckled gold and iridescent toning. Only a few trivial marks and faint hairlines are evident on each side. Census: 2 in 58 (1 in 58+), 1 finer (4/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24K2, PCGS# 6328)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.
This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
