Three-Coin Set of 1861-O Half Dollars From the S.S. Republic

Three-Coin Set of 1861-O Half Dollars, Shipwreck Effect. Ex: S.S. Republic. Three coins are included: 1861-O, United States Issue; 1861-O, Louisiana Issue; and an 1861-O, CSA Issue. Recovered from the shipwreck that went down in the autumn of 1865, the ship was located in the summer of 2003. The discovery of hundreds of half dollars came as a surprise to the salvors. This three-coin set is intended to show the progressive deterioration of the obverse die from federal issue to state ownership and finally to CSA authority. Traditionally, state and CSA 1861-O halves show a die crack from Liberty's nose to star 7. No such crack is present on these coins. However, they are identified as Wiley-02 (federal issue), Wiley-07 (state issue), and Wiley-13 (CSA issue). The state and CSA coins are graded Uncirculated, but the federal coin is ungraded (in our opinion, it is also technically Uncirculated but heavily corroded). The other two coins also show extensive corrosion from long-term saltwater exposure. The first two coins are well struck and the CSA piece shows some softness of detail. Housed in a spiffy cherrywood box with a Certificate of Authenticity and booklet with a DVD about the shipwreck.(Registry values: N208)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
