Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:
Magnificent 1839 No Drapery Quarter, MS66
1839 25C No Drapery MS66 NGC. The Seated Liberty quarter made its debut in 1838. Some numismatists, including Walter Breen, consider the first three issues, that is those with "No Drapery," to be separate design types. Breen writes in his Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins (1988):

"During summer 1838, the new Engraver, Christian Gobrecht, completed device punches for the new quarter dollars. These copied neither the dollars of 1836 nor the half dollars of 1837-38, but combined the dollars' Liberty Seated motif by Thomas Sully with a version of the old Reich-Kneass eagle; the denomination was for the first time expressed as QUAR DOL.

"Regular production coinage began Sept. 29, 1838. Only 466,000 were struck, a figure oddly close to the annual totals for 1839 and 1840-O of this design (491,146 and 382,200, respectively). That made this type, in the original Sully-Gobrecht conception, one of the shortest-lived of all.

"Understandably, these "No Drapery" coins have lately become recognized as scarce in all grades and very rare in mint state."

The 1839 Premium Gem No Drapery example offered in this lot displays partially prooflike fields that yield notable contrast with the motifs when the coin is tilted slightly under a light source. An attentive strike leaves above average definition on the design elements, especially the star radials, gown lines, and eagle's feathers. Portions of Liberty's hair and foot reveal the usual weakness. Soft sky-blue, yellow-gold, and lilac patina adorns both sides, each of which exhibits just a few minor marks that might well preclude an even finer grade. Census: 1 in 66, 1 finer (10/08).
