High Grade (MS64) 1849 Quarter1849 25C MS64 PCGS. The 1849 is much scarcer than its mintage of 340,000 pieces would indicate. Once ore began to arrive from the California gold fields, silver prices started to rise making contemporary coins such as the 1849 quarter worth more than their intrinsic value. As a result, a large percentage of the mintage was melted. Sharply struck, the surfaces display a few field marks on each side, and the obverse displays deep blue, golden, and gray toning with an essentially brilliant reverse.
