1850-O 25C MS63 PCGS....
Select Mint State 1850-O Seated Quarter1850-O 25C MS63 PCGS. Briggs 1-B. Liberty's rock, the shield, and date area all show heavy die rust, as well as on the reverse under the eagle's right (facing) wing. The large O mintmark is low and to the right of center under the eagle, thinner at the bottom than at the top. The lowest horizontal shield line is heavily doubled at the right side.
It is uncertain how many 1849-O and 1850-O quarters were struck--and how many survived the mass meltings of the 1850s, when silver rose as reckoned in gold dollars, due to the vast California discoveries. The 1849-O delivery was included in the 1850-O number, but the 1849-O is much rarer. Grayish-pink patina covers most of both sides, a bit heavier on the obverse. The coin has a good strike, but the deep coloration subdues the luster to a degree. Certified in an old-style small holder. Only one piece finer is certified at PCGS. Population: 6 in 63, 1 finer (8/08).
