Description

Low-Mintage 1857-S Quarter, MS63
Seldom Seen Finer

1857-S 25C MS63 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. The initial mintage was a skimpy 82,000 pieces, and most apparently entered circulation immediately, as the average grade of certified pieces is only slightly better than Choice XF. In MS63 this is one of only two examples at PCGS, with two finer (8/08). The date slopes downward slightly left to right, and the large S mintmark on the reverse is barely free of a feather on the left, and tilts to the left. The lustrous silver-gold surfaces show good field-device contrast, with lots of eye appeal. A well struck and pleasing coin, seldom seen finer. Certified in an old-style small holder.
Ex: Auction '89 (RARCOA, 7/1989), lot 156.
