Unsurpassed Gem 1858-O Quarter1858-O 25C MS65 NGC. The 1858-O quarter does not immediately come to mind as a key date in the Liberty Seated Quarter series. The mintage figure of 520,000 does not stand out in the series in any way, and the date can be found fairly readily and quite affordably in low grades. Nevertheless, a check of the population figures reveals that only eight pieces have been certified in any Mint State grade by the major services, and none are known finer than the present Gem. Original gray and lilac patina encompasses both sides of the coin, with hints of blue in the obverse periphery. The central devices are well struck, although a bit of weakness can be detected on the upper letters of the reverse. The surfaces are uncommonly smooth, easily in line with the grade, with perhaps the most notable pedigree indicator a small tick on Liberty's left (facing) shoulder. Unsurpassed quality for this date. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer (11/06).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 23TJ, PCGS# 5446)
