Condition Rarity AU50 1859-S Quarter1859-S 25C AU50 PCGS. The rarity of the 1859-S quarter was summed up by Larry Briggs in his 1991 The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Liberty Seated Quarters: "Most encountered are AG - VG and seem to have a problem of some sort. Coins in F/VF are quite scarce, XF - rare, and AU - extremely rare. To date no true Unc.'s are known." Briggs' assessment is still appropriate today. PCGS has certified a total of 66 1859-S quarters in all grades, primarily in Very Good to Very Fine, and NGC has seen a mere 12 examples, mainly in Very Fine and Extremely Fine. Neither service has certified a Mint State coin.
Dappled grayish-purple toning runs over both sides of the current AU specimen, which retains traces of luster in some of the recessed areas. The design elements are well-defined, including sharpness in the star centers, most of Liberty's hair, and the eagle's plumage. Both sides are remarkably clean. We mention a minute mark on the upper wrist of Liberty's left (facing) arm and another midway between star 11 and the right (facing) arm solely for identification purposes. Population: 3 in 50, 3 finer (11/12).(Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 23TN, PCGS# 5450)
