Lustrous and Rare Near-Gem 1866 Motto Quarter1866 25C Motto MS64 NGC. This is the first year that Mint added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the nation's larger coinage, where it retains it to this day (even if sometimes in awkward places). But the Philadelphia Mint in this year was chiefly concerned with pumping out vast quantities of minor coins and Seated halves, and the mintage figures for the Seated half dime, dime, and quarter are decidedly on the skimpy side. The quarter saw a production of only 26,800 pieces, and today Briggs rates the issue rare in all grades. This is a nice piece with no singular distractions or hairlines, although a small scrape downward from the Liberty cap likely limits a finer grade. The lustrous silver-gray surfaces show considerable contrast, and generate plenty of appeal. Census: 4 in 64, 17 finer (8/08).
