Description

1866-S 25C MS62 NGC. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. Since the suspension of specie payments continued for several years after the end of the Civil War, very little bullion reached the United States Mint for coinage purposes. In light of this reality, it is not hard to understand this S-mint issue's scant original delivery of only 28,000 pieces. As consumer prices remained very high on the frontier, however, the few coins that flowed from the San Francisco Mint's presses entered circulation and remained there for many years. This extremely scarce Mint State example is satiny and mostly brilliant, with few appreciable surface marks. Faint die clashing is evident on both sides. Population: 1 in 62, 2 finer (11/04).(#5469) (Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 23UC, PCGS# 5469)
