Description:
Partly Lustrous AU 1867-S Quarter
1867-S 25C AU50 PCGS. The mere 35 1867-S quarters that have been seen by PCGS and NGC attest to the rarity of this issue. The majority of pieces grade from VG to VF; AU coins are rare, and Mint State coins are nearly unobtainable. The current AU50 example displays light gray surfaces that are visited by speckles of deeper charcoal-gray in some of the border areas. The design elements are exceptionally well struck for the issue, with even the normally weak star centrils strong. A few faded marks on the right obverse field will help pedigree this example. Population: 1 in 50, 4 finer (11/08).
Ex: Charlotte ANA Signature (Heritage, 3/2007), lot 652, which realized $9,200.
