Description

Exceptionally High Grade 1867-S Quarter
MS64, Second Finest Certified

1867-S 25C MS64 NGC. Eliasberg-Richmond. Briggs 1-A. This reverse die was used to strike the 1866-S, the 1867-S, as well as 1869-S quarters. The mintage of the 1867-S was 48,000 pieces, but as is well known silver coinage circulated widely on the West Coast. Which means, of course, that few high grade examples have survived. If we take the number of coins certified by both of the major services, the number in all Mint State grades is a paltry six pieces (11/08). This is the second-finest certified, with the finest an incredible MS67!
The surfaces show the bright cartwheel luster common to most San Francisco products. This flashy mint luster enlivens the pale overlay of golden toning on each side. The devices are fully struck, and there are no observable abrasions on the obverse or reverse. This is a rare opportunity for the Seated quarter collector.
Ex: Eliasberg Collection (4/1997), lot 1489; Richmond Collection (David Lawrence, 3/2005), lot 1465.
