Description

Seldom Seen 1868-S Quarter, MS64

1868-S 25C MS64 PCGS. The 1868-S continues the tradition of scarcity from the West coast facility in spite of a mintage that should indicate greater availability. The end of the Civil War seemed to have no impact on the high attrition rate of S-mint silver coins, as indeed they continued to circulate just as heavily after the War as they had during it. The 1868-S had a mintage of only 96,000 pieces, but its availability in better grades is equal to a Philadelphia Mint coin with only a fraction of that production. A paltry five pieces have been certified of the '68-S in MS64 by both of the major services, and another five have been graded higher (8/08). This is a lovely piece with creamy mint luster and nearly untoned surfaces. Strongly struck, except on the upper two stars on the obverse, there are no noticeable abrasions on either side.

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
