Fine Sharpness 1870-CC Quarter1870-CC 25C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Fine Details. "Prior to 1997, the only quarter eagle with the 'CC' mintmark that had sold for $100,000 or more was the 1873-CC Without Arrows. Then in April of 1997 the most spectacular 1870-CC quarter crossed the auction block for $187,000! This event was another in the slowly rising 'CC' price evaluations that began at the Menjou Sale in 1950."
So writes Carson City Mint pundit Rusty Goe in his utilitarian The Mint on Carson Street. While this piece is not quite in the company of the Eliasberg specimen that traded hands in 1997--the only Mint State example known--it is nonetheless a desirable specimen of one of the rarest and most desired coins from that fabled Western mint. Goe favors an estimate of only 40 assay pieces as being released into circulation, pointing out that most examples seen are "... in the Very Fine grade or lower. Many of the lowest grade specimens are seen with corrosion, porosity, severe scrapes, scratches, graffiti, and cleaned surfaces."
The present example, while cleaned, probably long ago, shows a goodly amount of pleasing detail on both sides, and there are no mentionable problems, only some minor abrasions and moderate wear consistent with the Fine details grade.(Registry values: P9) (NGC ID# 23UL, PCGS# 5477)
