Description

Rare 1870-CC Seated Liberty Quarter

1870-CC 25C VF25 NGC. The 1870-CC Seated quarter is the rarest collectible date in the entire series, behind the 1873-CC, No Arrows issue, of which about five pieces are known. Authentication is absolutely essential for this rare issue, as counterfeits are known with attached mintmarks. This example shows two diagnostics of genuine pieces as outlined in Larry Briggs' Seated Liberty quarter Encyclopedia, namely a small, horizontal die scratch, underneath the top crossbar of the F in OF, that touches the middle serif; and a light die scratch in the recessed area behind the eagle's heel. The two C's in the mintmark are widely separated, with the tip of the fletchings near the first C. The surfaces are medium gray, with lighter silver-gray highpoints. Few consequential abrasions are seen, save for a pair of reeding marks on Liberty's torso. Seated Liberty quarter collectors will recognize this opportunity, and act accordingly.(Registry values: P9) (NGC ID# 23UL, PCGS# 5477)
