Legendary 1870-CC Seated Quarter in About Uncirculated1870-CC 25C AU 53 NGC. This coin was previously offered as lot 6278 in our 1999 Chicago ANA Sale, where it was cataloged as: "A glossy AU example of this prized Carson City quarter, the obverse has medium to dark blue-gray patina, while the reverse is lighter in hue with pearl-gray and gunmetal color on that side. The strike is typical for the date with the stars flat in the centers but otherwise sharp. There are few appreciable marks and the reverse is quite choice. Carson City quarters from 1870-1873 often have rough, porous surfaces (as seen to a lesser extent on this piece). It is claimed that this is from improper annealing and the mint's use of pure local silver, rather than the normal 90/10, silver/copper mixture.
"The 1870-CC is the rarest collectible Carson City quarter. Only 8,340 pieces were struck, and there are probably no more than a dozen known today in Extremely Fine, another three or four in AU, and a single Mint State piece (a fully prooflike coin that may well be a specimen striking)."
