Elusive 1872-S Quarter, XF45 NGC1872-S 25C XF45 NGC. A mere 83,000 quarters were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1872. A low mintage, combined with heavy attrition of coins in California during this period make this an especially scarce issue. It has been some time since we have seen this issue in one of our sales that has not been damaged or cleaned in some way. This evenly circulated specimen is a welcome addition to The Central States Sale. The centers are essentially untoned with a peripheral ring of russet and deep blue color. A couple of contact marks on the reverse are worthy of mention but should not deter a bidder from considering this specimen.(#5483) (Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 23UT, PCGS# 5483)
