1877-S/S 25C MS62 NGC. Briggs 4-D. A highly collectible variety, this coin owes its existence to profound Mint error. A Mint employee first punched the S-mintmark into the die sideways and, after realizing his error, corrected it by simply punching the properly oriented mintmark over the first impression. Suitable magnification reveals traces of the lazy S beneath the proper mintmark on this lustrous specimen. Crisply impressed and possessed of attractive golden patina, this predominantly smooth piece would garner a higher grade were it not for a couple of distracting milling marks in the fields. This is, nonetheless, an affordable representation of this curious variety that is of obvious importance to Seated quarter enthusiasts. (#5507) (Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23V7, PCGS# 5507)
