1878 25C MS65 PCGS. The 1878 quarter is a difficult coin to locate in all grades. Many of the nearly 2.3 million pieces struck were probably melted to make the first year Morgan dollars. The present scarcity of Gem and higher-graded specimens is apparent from a review of auction records that show just 13 appearances of MS65 examples through the major auction houses within the past ten years, with a mere six grading higher. The PCGS and NGC population reports are in more or less agreement with auction appearance data. As of March 2005, these two services combined have seen 14 Gems, and ten finer coins. The specimen offered in this lot has olive-green and cobalt-blue patina around the peripheral obverse, with the remaining surfaces being nearly brilliant. The design elements are sharply struck, and there are no mentionable marks over the lustrous surfaces. Population: 7 in 65, 6 finer (3/05).(#5508) (Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23V8, PCGS# 5508)
