Description:
Finest Certified Superb Gem
1878 Carson City Quarter
1878-CC 25C MS67 NGC. Relatively early in 1878, the Carson City Mint began production of Morgan dollars, and apparently no quarters were struck thereafter at the Western facility, due to the pressing Treasury obligation to fulfill the Bland-Allison Act. The 1878-CC quarter mintage ended at 996,000 pieces, significantly less than that of its 1876-CC and 1877-CC predecessors.
Thus it comes as little surprise that only a single 1878-CC quarter has met the lofty standards of the MS67 grade. That important numismatic prize is offered in the present lot. The surfaces are fully brilliant and remarkably devoid of marks, almost as if it was lifted with gloved hand from the dies as the last of its kind. Briggs' "cancelled obverse" variety (1-A) with a heavy straight diagonal die scratch (as made) across Liberty's waist. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (11/08).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2002), lot 6764.
