1878-S 25C Fine 12 NGC. Briggs 1-A. A subdued slate-gray piece that has a mere hint of granular surface. The 1878-S Half Dollar is a famous rarity within the Seated denominations, but its Quarter counterpart is also scarce. The production of 140,000 pieces was presumably completed early in the year, before the arrival of Morgan Dollar dies. It would be ten years before San Francisco struck additional Quarters. Census: 2 in 12, 25 finer (12/05).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 23VA, PCGS# 5510)
