Description:
Unsurpassed Gem 1891-O Quarter
1891-O MS 65 PCGS. The '91-O quarter is a true rarity in all grades. Despite the surplus of large coins during this era, merchants were crying for enough minor coinage to conduct business, and the New Orleans mint was again tasked to produce dimes and quarters for the first time since 1860. Millions of dimes were produced, but only a paltry 68,000 quarters, most of which disappeared into circulation. Two alleged proof pieces were struck to commemorate the mint's return to quarter production, and it is reasonable to believe that as most of the known mint state pieces are prooflike, they were pulled relatively early in the die run and kept as mementoes. Briggs rates the 1892-O as a High R.6 in any mint state grade. This piece is one of just two graded by PCGS (5/97) with none finer. Essentially brilliant with a light gray-gold cast, this lovely example is sharply struck with a light cameo contrast against the typical prooflike surfaces, and clearly merits the gem status assigned. A stellar opportunity to acquire a top-of-the-line rarity. (NGC ID# 23VS, PCGS# 5525)
