1873 5C Closed 3 MS65 PCGS. CAC....
1873 Shield Nickel, MS651873 5C Closed 3 MS65 PCGS. CAC. It is often difficult to differentiate Closed 3 and Open 3 Shield nickels. David Bowers, quoting Howard Spindel, notes: "Shield nickel collectors joke that there are three logotypes for 1873: Close 3, Open 3, and 'I Don't Know 3.'" While the PCGS insert on this piece says "Closed 3," we would opt for the third choice. Whispers of tan-gold toning accent satiny luster on each side, while the devices are well-struck and the preservation is pleasing. Numerous heavy die cracks travel through the wreath, a typical characteristic on this type in general. Population: 18 in 65 (1 in 65+), 3 finer (6/14).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 197.
