Description:
1880 Business Strike Shield Nickel, MS63
Lovely, Even Light Toning
1880 5C MS63 PCGS. CAC. As demonstration of the depth of rarities offered in this Platinum Night catalog, we have two unquestioned business strike 1880 Shield nickels. Only 16,000 pieces were struck for circulation. The same obverse die was used for business strikes and proofs, but the reverse die for coins struck for circulation show distinctive markers (just recently discovered): an "island" of metal in the field below the second T in STATES, a thornlike projection from a denticle below the TS in CENTS, and repunching on the left outside of the first S in STATES. These diagnostics are all evident on this coin; only the thornlike projection is a bit weak. The surfaces display excellent mint luster with little reflectivity in the fields. Each side has lovely rose-gray patina, and only the lightest marks are present. Population: 4 in 63, 14 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 276E, PCGS# 3810)
