Description:
1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS64+ Full Head
Glowing Mint Luster, Attractively Toned
1916 25C MS64+ Full Head PCGS. The Charles Barber-designed dimes, quarters, and half dollars were almost universally disliked, and all were replaced in 1916 by new designs of great artistic merit, the Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half dollar by Adolph A. Weinman, the Standing Liberty quarter by Hermon MacNeil. The Barber designs lasted 25 years inclusive. Even though the new Standing Liberty quarter design was well-received, the George Washington birth bicentennial in 1932 would doom MacNeil's design to be among the shortest coin series of the first half of the 20th century, enduring only until 1930, or 15 years inclusive. The 1916 quarter, produced to the extent of a meager 52,000 pieces, made it by far the lowest mintage of the series. It is an issue that is widely sought-after in all grades, a situation that started as soon as the low mintage was known. This is a lovely, glowing coin that exhibits light reddish patina over thick mint luster. There are no obvious abrasions on either side of this high-end piece.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 242Y, PCGS# 5705)
