Description:

1916 Standing Liberty Quarter, MS64
Low-Mintage First-Year Key
1916 25C MS64 NGC. In determining the comparative rarity of several key first-year issues from the early 20th century, it may be interesting and fruitful to compare their initial production figures. Among the popular first-year keys introduced in 1916 were the 1916-D Mercury dime, the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, and the 1916-S Obverse Mintmark half dollar.

At first glance, one notices that the mintage of the half dollar--roughly a half-million coins--is about 10 times that of the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, making it much more available to contemporary collectors, and it was the first of the three keys issued in 1916. The mintage of the 1916-D dime, the second new design of the year, is about five times as much, and the 1916-D is a rare coin in any grade above Very Good today.

Problems with the half dollar and dime would delay production of the new Standing Liberty quarters until quite near the end of the year. The skimpy 52,500 1916-dated Type One coins were intermingled with the 1917 Type One issues from which they were virtually indistinguishable, diluting their appeal as novelty items and further contributing to their status as notable rarities. For all these reasons, the 1916 Sanding Liberty quarter is probably the rarest of the three silver keys introduced in 1916.

The present coin is a charming Choice specimen with well-detailed design elements and especially vibrant mint luster. The well-preserved surfaces are essentially untoned, adding to the outstanding eye appeal. Census: 58 in 64, 30 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 242Y, PCGS# 5704)
