Gem 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter
Remarkably Lustrous Full Head

1916 25C MS65 Full Head PCGS Secure. According to Roger Burdette in Renaissance of American Coinage 1916-1921, all 52,000 of the 1916-dated Standing Liberty quarters were struck on December 16 of that year. While it is true that the Mint released them in January 1917 along with the first-minted 1917 Type Ones, that is not the whole story. The 1916 mintage might not have been produced at all except for the desire on the part of Mint officials to have new designs ready for all three subsidiary silver coinage designs during the year 1916. Burdette quotes a letter dated Jan. 18, 1915, from William P. Malburn, assistant Treasury secretary, to Treasury Secretary William Gibbs McAdoo:

"From the accompanying memorandum of the Acting Director of the Mint you will observe that the present silver half dollar, quarter and dime were changed in 1892, and a new design may, therefore, be adopted in 1917 (corrected to 1916). This can be done any time in the year, and therefore, if you desire, a design may be made and coinage commenced on January 2 of that year."

The year 1916 would have been the 25th year (inclusive) since the Barber designs were introduced in 1892, although waiting a full 25 years would have required a coinage change in 1917. This is a remarkable, vibrantly lustrous example of this low-mintage, first-year issue. Each side is mostly brilliant and the strike details are strong throughout. Population: 73 in 65 (1 in 65+) Full Head, 15 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2AMV, PCGS# 5705)

Learn about consigning with us

What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
