Description

1918/7-S Quarter, Bright, Lustrous AU58
Low-Availability in All Grades

1918/7-S 25C AU58 PCGS. FS-101. For as bold an overdate as the 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter variety is, it is more than a little surprising that it went unnoticed for nearly two decades, first appearing at auction in December 1937. Perhaps this is a function of how little attention the general public actually pays to coins, as well as a reflection on the tough economic times of the Depression: Coins were for spending, not admiring.

Nonetheless, the top right corner of the 7 underdigit slightly straightens out part of the top right loop of the 8, and the bottom loop of the 8 is boldly bisected by the diagonal of the 7 projecting directly through it. Numerous other die diagnostics are present on all examples. The most prominent among them is die clashing on the obverse in the form of an E near Liberty's right (facing) knee. Another clash, from the eagle's wing, appears as a thin set of double parallel lines running diagonally down from the top left serif of the T(RUST) down through the upright of that letter.

This remarkable near-Mint example retains most of the original mint luster on each side and shows just the slightest hint of friction over the high points. While mostly presenting as a brilliant coin, each side has just the slightest overlay of reddish patina.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 243A, PCGS# 5726)
