Description

Significant C. Bechtler Gold Dollar, First U.S. Production

(1831-34) G$1 C.Bechtler Dollar, 30G. AU58 NGC. Kagin-1, R.4. This is one of the earliest Bechtler pieces struck at the beginning of the families coin-making enterprise. In fact, this is a historically significant issue, as it is the first gold dollar coin of any type produced in the United States. The 30 grain weight was consistent with the old tenor standard of United States gold coinage, thus the dating of this piece between 1831 (the first year of Bechtler coinage operations) and 1834 (the date of new tenor gold coinage). Rich green-gold color with darker olive and rose toning on both sides. This is a lovely example despite minor blemishes. Listed on page 344 of the 2006 Guide Book. (NGC ID# 2B94, PCGS# 10064)
