Description

Near-Mint Bechtler Two and a Half, 70G. 20C.

(1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 70G. 20C. AU58 NGC. K-13, R.6. Plain Edge. From the seventh series of Bechtler gold. This Territorial was struck using South Carolina gold and shares the same obverse die as the K-11 two and a half in this sale, although the latter piece was struck from Georgia bullion. The obverse die is easily recognizable by the die break extending from the rim through T in BECHTLER. The Bechtler's were prolific private gold minters and their coins were greatly respected by the general public of their time for being of the true weight and fineness stated, and the gold value was typically worth more than the face value. The specimen offered here is sharply and evenly struck throughout. The green-gold surfaces are lightly abraded with the only notable distractions being a series of faint pinscratches below 250 on the obverse. Listed on page 358 of the 2009 Guide Book. Census: 3 in 58, 5 finer (8/08). (PCGS# 10070)
