Description:
C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G With Star
K-20, Attractive AU58 Example
(1837-42) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star AU58 NGC. K-20, R.4. The Bechtler gold coinage of the 1830s through early 1850s fulfilled a valuable aid to the economy of the Southeast during what was, essentially, America's first gold rush. The well-respected coinage paved the way for the establishment of the first federal branch mints in 1838 in Charlotte and Dahlonega, which coined exclusively gold, thus lessening the need for the Bechtler pieces afterward. The 134G With Star is the most available Bechtler half eagle variety, although still very scarce. This is a nice, original example boasting much mint luster remaining over greenish-gold surfaces. Myriad minuscule surface ticks make the planchet appear microporous, but there are no overt marks save for a couple of scrapes above BEC, where the rim is thinnest due to a slightly off-center strike. Listed on page 374 of the 2013 Guide Book. Census: 12 in 58, 16 finer (3/13). (PCGS# 10097)
