Description

High grade 1849 Moffat & Co. Eagle

1849 $10 Moffat & Co. Ten Dollar, "Ten Dol." XF40 NGC. K-6a, High R.5. The first coins issued by the private firm of Moffat & Company were 1849-dated Ten Dollar gold pieces. At the time of their production, Moffat & Company was the only private minter located in San Francisco besides Norris, Gregg, & Norris, and this denomination does not usually appear much finer than this. This is an unusually attractive coin for the grade with even overall wear and plenty of bold definition remaining in the more protected areas of the design. The number of abrasions is not excessive, and the color is a rich, original, green-gold shade. A perfect candidate for inclusion in a circulated Territorial gold type set that requires a representation of Moffat & Company coinage. Listed on page 295 of the current 2005 Guide Book.(#10246) (PCGS# 10246)
