Sharply Struck 1849 Mormon Quarter Eagle, AU53 NGC1849 $2 1/2 Mormon Quarter Eagle AU53 NGC. K-1, High R.5. A second AU53 example of this rare and very popular territorial gold issue. This piece shows remarkably strong definition. The all-seeing Eye of Jehovah is fully detailed and the clasped hands are completely outlined. In fact, the only area of weakness we see is the 1 in the date, which is missing. Slight buckling is seen in this area, but even more profound buckling is seen in the lower reverse field below the eye. A noticeable amount of mint luster still remains around the outer devices. Lightly abraded, as one would expect for a coin in this grade, the only mentionable marks are located on the lower of the two clasped hands and a couple of tiny planchet voids above the eye on the reverse. Listed on page 308 of the 2005 Guide Book.
