Description:
1849 Copper Die Trial, AU55
Massachusetts & California Company Five
Kagin 2-B
1849 DT$5 Massachusetts & California Copper Die Trial AU55 PCGS. Kagin 2-B, High R.7. There are two different versions of the Massachusetts & California Co. five dollar gold pieces. The first version, and the type offered here, has the denomination spelled FIVE D. and those are the die trials struck at the time of the Gold Rush. The second version was struck in the early 20th century, possibly by Stephen Nagy, and has the denomination presented as 5 DOLLARS. These versions are sometimes called Original and Restrike pieces. Obviously, the Original examples are more highly prized than the restrikes.
This specimen has been off the market for 40 years. Our consignor notes: "I have had the coin in my collection since 1972. Only two examples have been graded by PCGS. Mine was first -- I submitted the coin to PCGS in 1999 for grading, and only one other has appeared since that time -- also graded AU55."
Medium to dark olive surfaces appear on both sides with some splashes of lighter tan on this Choice AU specimen. A trace of wear and minor handling marks appear on each side of this pleasing piece. Here is an extremely important opportunity to acquire an elusive piece of California Gold Rush history. (PCGS# 10230)
