Description:

AU 1851 Humbert Fifty, 880 Thous., K-5
Reeded Edge, Even Orange-Gold Color
1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 880 Thous. AU50 NGC. K-5, Low R.5. The octagonal Humbert fifty dollar gold pieces dated 1851 were struck in either Lettered Edge (date on the edge) or Reeded Edge versions, with fineness 880 THOUS. or 887 THOUS. The K-5 shows the date below the eagle close to the rim, with the peripheral lettering reading clockwise from left of the date around the eight sides, AUGUSTUS / HUMBERT / UNITED / STATES / ASSAYER / OF GOLD / CALIFORNIA. As is often seen on AU and lower-graded examples of this issue, the present piece is heavily abraded, yet most of the abrasions are small. The obverse marks are more apparent than those on the reverse, with its busy engine-turned design. Portions of the peripheral legends are faint, nearly unreadable, also typical for the issue. The surfaces are orange-gold in color accented by significant reddish patina. Wear is evenly distributed over the high points. Listed on page 377 of the 2013 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10211)

Learn About Consigning With Us
What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
