Description

1852 Assay Office Ten, K-12a
Beautiful, Bright MS62 Example

1852 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar MS62 NGC. K-12a, R.4. O in OFFICE under N of UNITED, strong beads. The California firm of Moffat & Co., a well-respected and important one among early Gold Rush coiners and assayers, was dissolved in 1852, and a new entity, the United States Assay Office of Gold, took over the Moffat contract for gold coinage. The 1852 eagles all stated the denomination as TEN DOLS., while the much rarer 1853 tens give it as TEN D. The greater availability of the 1852 pieces, however, also means they can occasionally be found in attractive Mint State condition, as with this MS62 NGC example. The surfaces are beautiful, bright greenish-gold with few marks of any import. Gorgeous luster washes from this boldly struck coin. Listed on page 379 of the 2013 Guide Book. Census: 11 in 62, 6 finer (3/13)
