Description

1852 Humbert Eagle, AU58
Very Rare 'K-10c' Reverse

1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar AU58 NGC. "K-10c," R.6. Unlisted in the classic Kagin reference, this rare reverse die shows the legend beginning AUGUSTUS HUMBERT, and the N in UNITED is centered between the O and F in OF on the line below. On the reverse, a bold die crack runs from the rim at 1:30 through the M in HUMBERT, the last S in STATES, the L in CALIFORNIA, and the 8 in the date 1852, gradually fading out below. Several of the letters in the legend are weak due to advanced die deterioration, and the A in STATES is nearly effaced. Die deterioration is prominent on the obverse as well, where the first three letters in STATES are weak, as are the left scroll border and portions of the ribbon the eagle bears in its beak. Contact marks and wear are minor overall, although the advanced die state makes actual wear look a bit more prominent than it in fact is. The surfaces show considerable luster remaining on yellow-gold surfaces with some smoke-gray and orange accents. Census: 8 in 58, 5 finer (10/12). Listed on page 379 of the 2013 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10187)

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
