Description:
Mint State 1852 Humbert Ten Dollar
K-10a, Advanced Obverse Die State
1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar MS60 NGC. K-10a, Low R.4. On the reverse, the Y in ASSAYER is centered between NI in CALIFORNIA. The late state of the 1852 Humbert obverse die, showing extensive die crumbling on the letters of UNITED, a variant that Don Kagin called IINITED -- but that would imply a lack of the horizontal footer at the bottom of the U, while the opposite is true: The heavy die cracks make both the vertical ascenders and the horizontal footer of the U heavier than normal. Much of the bottoms of UNITED and STATES are connected by heavy die breaks, and the N is little more than a blob; the I in UNITED appears to be missing its upper serifs. Heritage cataloger Brian Koller writes in an article in the December 18, 2006, Coin World that the Humbert ten dollar pieces' "... method of die manufacture, with many hand-punched elements, puts them in a category similar to the Bechtler gold pieces of North Carolina and Georgia, which are currently collected (and listed in the Guide Book) by die variety." This is a beautiful and rare Mint State example with much luster appearing over highly attractive orange-gold surfaces. Listed on page 379 of the 2013 Guide Book. (PCGS# 10187)
