Important Choice VF 1852 Humbert Ten Dollars1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar VF35 PCGS. Breen-7713, variant of K-10, R.6+. A chestnut-gold example of this scarce Humbert issue. All legends are clear, and the eagle's wings display ample plumage detail. A few moderate marks are located on the lower reverse, but these are of little consequence.
Technically, the present piece catalogs as Kagin-10, since the 2 is not punched over a 1. However, the reverse die has the 1852 date in a different location than depicted on the Kagin plate, and a diagonal die break (different than that seen on Kagin-8) ascends across the reverse. The reverse die does not match the plate for Breen-7713, but Breen refers to a different positional variety with A(SSAYER) above (CALIF)O(RNIA), presumably this variety. This reverse die (compare with the following lot) is rarely encountered, and last appeared in our 2002 FUN Signature auction as lot 7884. Listed on page 297 of the 2005 Guide Book.(#10187) (PCGS# 10187)
