1852 Moffat & Co. Wide Date Ten Dollar AU531852 $10 Moffat & Co. Wide Date Ten Dollar AU53 NGC. K-9, R.6. Less abraded than is typically found on these heavy, higher denomination territorial issues, with pleasing reddish accents and the normal softness of strike over the design elements. The firm of Moffat & Co. was one of the earliest issuers of California gold coinage. Only one other firm, Norris Gregg and Norris, was producing gold coinage at the time. Moffat & Co. struck ten dollar coins in 1849 and again in 1852. The 1852 pieces come in Close Date and Wide Date varieties; these are of approximately equal rarity.
