Description

1852 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar, AU50
Large Head, Wide Date, K-4

1852 $10 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar, Large Head, Wide Date AU50 PCGS. CAC. K-4, R.5. The most commonly seen die state with prominent die cracks through the lower periphery but not the bisecting crack of the terminal state. Many who came to the California gold fields in the late 1840s and early 1850s were displaced or otherwise affected by the Revolutions of 1848 that took place in Western and Central Europe. Among them were Count S.C. Wass and A.P. Molitor, Hungarians who founded their eponymous firm and issued this private ten dollar coin, among many others. The left obverse and reverse are extremely weak, on the latter side nearly obliterating the letters SMV (for "Standard Mint Value"), but the ample luster remaining on the yellow-to-orange surfaces points to how this coin is only lightly worn. Scattered abrasions, a few sharp, contribute to the grade. Listed on page 389 of the 2014 Guide Book. For the variety, Population: 13 in 50, 14 finer (6/13).
